De Persgroep acquires titles Humo, Story, TeVe Blad and Vitaya

At the end of last year, Sanoma decided to run its media activities in Belgium and the Netherlands strategically and operationally as a single unit called Sanoma Media BeNe. As a result, and following careful consideration, the decision has been taken to focus on the areas of Women and Home&Deco, in Belgium - those areas in which Sanoma has a clear expertise in both countries.

The media landscape is experiencing major and rapid changes, both in print and digitally. The circulation of printed publications has been under pressure for a number of years already, and there is no reason to assume that this will change, which means that consolidation is necessary.

In the areas of Women and Home&Deco, Sanoma aims for a sustained healthy development and a successful extension to digital platforms, which will require investment. Sanoma has therefore chosen to sell Humo, Story and TeVe Blad to De Persgroep. The licence for the monthly Vitaya will also be transferred to De Persgroep.

Henk Scheenstra, CEO of Sanoma Media Belgium: "Our decision to focus our attention on our Women and Home&Deco domains is obvious: Libelle/Femmes d'Aujourd'hui is already the most important women's weekly and Feeling/Gael the most prominent women's monthly in Belgium. Our readers, particularly women, are therefore central and the starting point in our approach. By focusing on these areas, we will be able to fulfil our mission even better: bringing our target groups relevant and strong brands, products and services. We will do this on all platforms so that we can best serve our B2B partners too."

With these transactions, De Persgroep is acquiring magazines which it strongly believes in and which enhance its News and Entertainment portfolio, an area that the company has built considerable expertise in already.

Koen Verwee, CEO of de Persgroep Publishing: "Humo, Story, TeVe Blad and Vitaya are magazines that perfectly complement the news and entertainment media that we already have in-house. The printed media market is under pressure, but it is still important and well worth investing in. With strong titles such as these, there is also a great opportunity to build successful digital extensions. That is what we are going to work on, together with our new colleagues.”

The Belgian competition authority will be notified of this deal immediately. While the investigation lasts and pending approval from the Belgian competition authority, the titles concerned will continue to be published by Sanoma.
